Pew Comment on Inspector General's Review of NOAA's Fisheries Enforcement Programs

January 22, 2010

BOSTON — Peter Baker, manager of the Pew Environment Group's New England Fisheries Program, today issued the following comment in response to the Inspector General's report on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office of Law Enforcement.

"As the Inspector General's report correctly points out, the perceived problems with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Office for Law Enforcement (OLE) regarding transparency and trust are particularly acute here in New England," says Peter Baker, manager of the Pew Environment Group's New England Fisheries Program. "It is good to hear that NOAA will focus on addressing these problems. We believe that implementation of sectors in New England this spring will be an opportunity for OLE to improve its relationship with the industry. Sector management gives fishermen an incentive to work hand-in-hand with OLE to enforce sector rules and thus uphold the integrity of the sector allocations."
